3 Signs Your Child May Need Early Orthodontic Intervention
Your child’s teeth and jaws change quickly as they grow. Some crooked or crowded teeth are temporary, while other concerns may benefit from early orthodontic attention.
An early orthodontic evaluation does not automatically mean your child needs braces. It gives your orthodontist an opportunity to assess how the teeth and jaws are developing and determine whether treatment or monitoring is appropriate.
1. Difficulty With Biting Or Chewing
Pay attention if your child regularly struggles to bite into food, chew comfortably, or close their teeth together. An underbite, overbite, crossbite, or other bite issue may affect how the teeth function.
Your child may also frequently bite their cheeks or tongue. These signs are worth mentioning during a dental or orthodontic evaluation.
2. Crowded Or Overlapping Teeth
Crowding can occur when there is not enough room for permanent teeth to come in properly. You may notice teeth growing behind or in front of other teeth, significant overlapping, or permanent teeth that have difficulty erupting.
Crowding does not always require immediate treatment. An orthodontist can monitor your child’s development and determine whether early intervention could help.
3. Noticeable Jaw Or Facial Changes
Watch for a jaw that appears uneven, shifts when your child bites, or does not seem to line up properly. You may also notice a significant difference between the upper and lower jaws.
These changes can have different causes, so they require a professional evaluation rather than a diagnosis based on appearance alone.
When Should Your Child See An Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic checkup by age 7. This visit can help identify developing problems and determine whether your child needs treatment now or simply needs to be monitored.
